/etc/mc/mc.ext is the place to look. My copy indicates that mc should do exactly what you want when the <return> key is pressed. Not having OpenOffice on this machine means I can not test it so if it doesn't work for you have a read of man mc and try customising a ~/.mc/bindings file.
