And... just for completeness, I found that I *can* use backtick as a
prefix in tmux, and also pass a backtick thru tmux to a terminal
session, by including this in .tmux.conf:

  set -g prefix `
  bind ` send-prefix

So... life is good!  (At least the part of it that depends on terminal
multiplexing :)
