Something peculiar happened. After failing to connect with ppp and kppp, I decided to try wvdial. It also failed the authorization stage. While I was doing something else, it redialed and got connected.
I then decided to try the same thing with pon. It failed to connect. I followed this with poff. It then redialed on its own and got connected. I am sending this message using Debian.
