aha - thank you for that command hint !

after dinking around with some of the dependencies it looks like libavutil50 
was causing all the problems.

The strange thing is that it _still_ said it should be comming from wheezy.  
Yet purging it and reinstalling vlc looks to have fixed everything.

Strange.
