downgrading it, how do I do that without losing everything else that
seems to be dependent on it?
For reference, this is an installation from squeeze that was updated
to wheezy, but I have now read that this is an issue for those who
have done fresh wheezy installs as well.

Problem can be replicated using an alternate USB keyboard (Logitech).

Some additional info, but am not sure of the relevance, so ...
* There is no xorg.conf file present in the system, but xorg 1:7.6+6 is
installed
* A recent update installed GRUB2-common (although grub2 and grub are not)
* HAL is not installed
* udev is 170-1
* problem not fixed by removing and replugging keyboard/ mouse at login
screen
anyone ... ?
