Hi and thanks for the reply. I should have mentioned this in my original message, but the intent is indeed to write the image to sda overwriting the boot loader and disk and replacing the current install entirely with a fresh image. When I run dd as mentioned in Debian it does work partially in that the new boot loader does come up, but something seems to be wrong with how the image was written to disk because immediately after the boot loader starts to boot the OS will hang or error out. Initially I suspected a bad image or issue with my test VM, but after trying many things over the last couple days I have been able to confirm that it is not the image or my procedure. As I mentioned, the same image and dd command run from a different Linux distro does overwrite sda with the new image and is able to boot properly...so that's why I was thinking I might missing something specific to Debian.
