New upstream versions, including new kernel versions, rarely, if ever, make it into a Debian version after release. Stable means unchanging, so you won't see many change in Squeeze from this point forward. We had an Etch-and-half kernel during that release, but I think that was mainly because Etch shipped with a 2.4 kernel(?). Eventually, someone will package 2.6.37 or greater for backports, I'll bet. In the mean time you have a few choices. A manual "backport" (which shouldn't be too bad) is done by downloading the testing, unstable, or experimental package and rebuilding it in a stable environment. You might be surprised at the number of packages where this "just works". You can then install using dpkg. You are responsible for tracking any required updates; it is very unlikely APT will ever flag such a package as "upgradable". Another way is to run a slightly mixed system. Set your default release, use apt-cache policy to confirm that the squeeze repositories are now priority 990, add testing, unstable, experimental or some combination to your sources.list, update, and install one of the new packages, or use the 'package/testing' type package to upgrade select packages. With the way the kernel is packaged (different versions are different packages because they install files to different places), this won't be a package upgrade, at least not for the kernel package. If you do upgrade some packages into testing/unstable/experimental, remember that downgrades aren't supported, so it may be very hard to move back. (Usually a *purge* of the new version followed by a install of the old version will work, but not always, and the purge itself might cause some dependency problems.) -- Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. ,= ,-_-. =. b...@iguanasuicide.net ((_/)o o(\_)) ICQ: 514984 YM/AIM: DaTwinkDaddy `-'(. .)`-' http://iguanasuicide.net/ \_/
