Debian was trying to remove nv from Squeeze before Squeeze became the stable release. Their attitude seemed to be that (1) it is no longer supported upstream (i.e. by Nvidia) and (2) we have a replacement free driver, nouveau. It was only when I opened a bug report against xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (that it did not work with interlaced video modes, which my monitor requires) that they relented and allowed nv to stay in the release. But here is apparently yet another situation where nv appears to be best, or in some cases the only, free driver that works. -- .''`.
