Everyone most assuredly does *not* use grub2. There's grub-legacy, extlinux, lilo, and others. I don't use grub2. As for a rescue disk, for as often as I need one, which isn't often, the Debian installer in rescue mode has generally sufficed for me. There are fancier alternatives.
