Still on Lenny amd64:
root@fischer:~# dpkg -S /etc/magic.mime

root@fischer:~# apt-cache policy file
file:
  Installed: 4.26-1
  Candidate: 4.26-1

Yet:
http://packages.debian.org/search?suite=default&section=all&arch=any&searchon=contents&keywords=magic.mime
[..]
/etc/magic.mime                          libmagic1

So I'd just delete  "/etc/magic.mime" and try again, although it does
seem strange how this occurred.
