Some routers provide a logging facility that allows to 1) store the logs inside the router itself or 2) send the logs to an internal computer. Should you lose connection frequently or modem restarts it will be dropped there. To test the link speed you can first ensure your router is synchronized at the right up/down speed and then run any online test available out there.
