I did an security upgrade this evening and sure enough, the method described above saved my butt. After the upgrade I rebooted (120 packages were affected so I thought it was a prudent action). After that X was sluggish on things that worked while other things just didn't work. I managed to get an xterm working so used it to restore the XF86Config-4 and then rebooted again.
