After ca. 15 a. of Debian: / 2 Gb swap total RAM /home 4 Gb /usr 6 Gb /var 3 Gb /scratch ... /scratch/user/... That's the most comfortable layout I've come up with (Debian specific). Handle the OS and minimal user usage, then show them where else space is. On a single box, that is.
