Replying to myself: It's a unsolved GNOME bug dated on 2005 :-/ *** show hidden files doesn't work on desktop https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=309856 *** Good news is that it can be by-passed by clicking -over the desktop- "Ctrl +H" combo key to show both hidden and backup files/folders.
