sources.list(5) explains it in some detail.  The intended syntax is so
that you can have both

  deb http://debian.example.com/debian/ unstable main
  deb http://debian.example.com/debian/ project/experimental/

to reference both traditional "dists" trees and specific directories
on the same logical site.
