If this is representative of the usual state of your machine, then it seems indeed a very stressed one. I usually get load averages of 0.17, 0.17, 0.15 on my AMD 300MHz with 384 MB RAM, and I'm running a slew of server software. > PID USER PRI NI SIZE RSS SHARE STAT %CPU %MEM TIME COMMAND > 3993 smmsp 19 0 2476 2472 1864 S 12.9 0.5 0:00 sendmail > 7566 root 9 0 988 988 748 S 7.3 0.2 0:20 top > 3995 root 16 0 2700 2696 2420 R 7.3 0.6 0:00 sendmail > 3980 rolf 16 0 980 980 748 R 6.4 0.2 0:00 top > 976 identd 9 0 716 716 580 S 1.8 0.1 0:12 identd > 977 identd 10 0 716 716 580 S 1.8 0.1 0:12 identd > 3992 root 10 0 1068 1068 884 S 1.8 0.2 0:00 mail > 218 root 9 0 2408 2408 1820 S 0.9 0.5 0:06 named > 443 root 12 0 2512 2508 2288 S 0.9 0.5 0:04 sendmail Hmm... too many top instances, and it seems you've caught sendmail on its occasional busy moments. The 'top picture' taken above was taken 35 minutes after boot, perhaps the machine is still running the daily/weekly/monthly anacron jobs? Make sure you understand the way your system runs in as much detail as possible. - do an occasional 'ps', and try to understand what each entry is doing there - check your /var/log/ files, especially syslog and messages. - check /etc/anacrontab and all /etc/cron* items HTH, -- Carlos Sousa http://vbc.dyndns.org/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
