True is that mime types are a mess in Firefox (they are not very well managed) ;-(. Besides, Firefox also relies on your system settings to handle the applications for opening resources that are not registered in its own application database. Do you have registered ".torrent" extension within GNOME (or your DE)? You can download a ".torrent" file and the run "gnomevfs-info file.torrent".
