I have to recognize that I still fail to understand Exim's full

Are you using a smart host configuration? 

If yes, most probably your ISP (o e-mail provider) is requesting you to 
authenticate before sending e-mails (smtp auth). Have you already setup 
that information (login/password) in Exim?
