I am coming to this rather late, so I apologise if the problem has already 
been solved.

The last two Dells on which I have installed distros have required, I think, 
F12 (tho' it could have been F2) to get to the boot menu and boot from the 
DVD/CD drive.  (Regardless of anything in the BIOS!)
