Some extra info. to help whoever may be concerned: I did the update from inside a screen of multi-gnome terminal while running X. It worked without any strangeness. I started the upgrade just before going to bed. This morning it was complete. I read my mail. Saw the post to which I'm responding. Restarted X. Flawless performance all the way. And the xterm security concern is gone.
If others have Robert's problem, or similar, I can post details about my system, and maybe someone can figure out what aspects of a Woody installation trigger problems.
