I'm trying to install a USB scanner in Woody 3.0r1. From
the docs, I should be able to manage it. However, I'm
confused by the following:-

a. 'dpkg - l' does not show the sane package yet 'whereis
sane' gives output like '/etc/sane.d /usr/lib/sane' etc.
There is a man page for sane, but none for xscanimage
which is said to be in the sane package (same for xcam).

b. 'sane-find-scanner' finds my scanner and gives the correct
   vendor, product and device details.

Has sane been included in another program? If not, why does
it not show as being installed? A cache search shows it to be
a separate package.

I also have Knoppix installed and can scan in that although
not as well as I need, and rather than try to improve there
I want to perfect Woody (my main working os).

What group should the scanner be in? At the moment the device
/dev/usb/scanner0 is owned by root and in group root.

Grateful for any help. John.
