I believe this has been fixed in Debian Sid/Unstable. Are you
using Woody?

Yep, sure am a woody user

Can anyone else recommend another app, mainly for data backup,
preferably GUI since it will be for occasional use.

For Gnome users: nautilus-cd-burner (something which should work just like any nautilus file operation, i.e. you cut and paste or drag and drop).

For KDE users: k3b (a bit klunky to my eyes it actually resembles
a proprietary CD burn program)

Everybody else: something like "mkisofs -J -R -V "CD Label"
/datadir | cdrecord dev=0,0 driveropts=burnfree speed=16"
(nothing but the command line should satisfy those who think
Gnome and KDE are too much)

I always seem to end up on the command line ... could be the same here though I am quite keen on crw
