I just installed debian 3.0; however, I can't get ppp to dial out. plog output shows: chat[263]:Can't get terminal parameters: Input/Output error setserial -g /dev/ttyS3 shows: UART: 16550A, Port: 0x1400, IRQ: 18 the Port and IRQ I got from winxp device manager. I've also got an ethnet card which apparently is active; hence, I wonder if I should disable that. OTOH, maybe I should install a driver for the conextant HCF modem I've got. But then, I'm unsure how to do that. I suppose the Makefile for the driver will set the proper Major and Minor numbers for the device, but then I guess it must ask for what device is my modem. However, I can't do that because I haven't a c compiler yet. I can't get a c compiler until my modem is up. Hence, what I've done is download the c compiler .deb files on my windows machine, mounted the windows partition on /mnt/winxp, but now I can't figure how to use apt to dselect to install the debs. I've read the www.debian.org/doc/manuals/apt-howto; however, it claims one step in the installation is to use dpkg-scanpackages. However, there's no such program, as yet.
Would someone suggest how I should solve this problem?
TIA.
