This is true, linux kernels have been doing that for quite a while now.

mount -t vfat /dev/<proper device name> <where you want to mount it>
With DBIAN there is no modification of the file /etc/fstab when you connect a
USB storage device.
You may want to look into using the automount package, if you wanted to
have your usb or other udev devices mounted automatically.
