Eric, You are trying to run the file /proc/sys/dev/parport/parport0/autoprobe. That's doesn't make sense. More fundamentally, execute permissions are probably not set on that file (do ls -l and look for any "x"s in the first set of letters).
You probably want to do: cat /proc/sys/dev/parport/parport0/autoprobe instead. Martin PS -- you are cross-posting to two lists with a basic unix/linux question. You may want to pick up a good linux book (perhaps http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0596000715/ref=pd_sim_books_1/102-4068441-1484105?v=glance&s=books) to help you get started and so you don't have to email the world to get these types of answers.
