I'm now using Linux debian 2.6.32-3-amd64 #1 SMP Wed Feb 24 18:07:42 UTC
2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux but I'm still not able to read DVDs or CDs. The media
and the hardware that I'm using *works* without problem in windows and mac
osx.
Besides upgrading my kernel, I also changed some things in fstab so that my
fstab now looks like:

missing codepage or helper program, or other error
(could this be the IDE device where you in fact use
ide-scsi so that sr0 or sda or so is needed?)
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so
