That would be rather unlikely.  Make sure you use dpkg >= 1.15.7 before
proceeding.

That _is_ dpkg (or rather, u-a) database corruption…

Just reinstall aptitude, or run

update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/aptitude aptitude 
/usr/bin/aptitude-curses 30
