Coriander in Lenny gives an image from a Unibrain Fire-i provided "chmod 666 /dev/raw1394".
My /etc/motion/motion.conf in Lenny declares, videodevice /dev/raw1394 and consequently these lines appear in /var/log/syslog. My interpretation is that /dev/raw1394 is not the device name needed for V4L. Incidentally, motion would not start with the stock pid file. process_id_file /var/run/motion.pid process_id_file /var/run/motion/motion.pid appears to be appropriate.
