What is your default runlevel. It should be 2 in normal mode. You
could find it from the command "runlevel".
# runlevel
N 2
Anyway, just see your /etc/inittab and make sure that the required
gettys are there.
For my debian squeeze system, these are the relevant lines.
# Note that on most Debian systems tty7 is used by the X Window System,
# so if you want to add more getty's go ahead but skip tty7 if you run X.
#
1:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty1
2:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty2
3:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty3
4:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty4
5:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty5
6:23:respawn:/sbin/getty 38400 tty6
I've got exactly the same lines in my inittab file.
ps aux | grep getty
root 2183 0.0 0.0 5864 604 tty1 Ss+ 09:58 0:00
/sbin/getty 38400 tty1
root 2184 0.0 0.0 5864 600 tty2 Ss+ 09:58 0:00
/sbin/getty 38400 tty2
root 2185 0.0 0.0 5864 604 tty3 Ss+ 09:58 0:00
/sbin/getty 38400 tty3
root 2186 0.0 0.0 5864 604 tty4 Ss+ 09:58 0:00
/sbin/getty 38400 tty4
root 2187 0.0 0.0 5864 604 tty5 Ss+ 09:58 0:00
/sbin/getty 38400 tty5
root 2188 0.0 0.0 5864 604 tty6 Ss+ 09:58 0:00
/sbin/getty 38400 tty6
root 3807 0.0 0.0 9604 896 pts/0 S+ 19:30 0:00 grep getty
But still no virtual console ... :(
Thanks for your interest Anand.
