..will it run off the compressed image dd'ed on a disk? Knoppix don't, unless I missed something.
You do not need to dd on to disk. I am distributing the compressed knoppix file, kernel and initrd, so just add kernel and initrd on grub, and then knopix will automatically find the KNOPPIX file and use that. no dd or formatting is required.
