For a/b/g the Alfa AWUS036H has good support and the (last I checked) the top performing usb card out there. It uses the rtl8187 driver and should work out-of-the-box with the stock Debian kernel. If you want the N version of the same card, it will require the rtl8187se. This will take a bit more work to get going (such as installing the backports kernel) in Debian and may have issues as it is a sort-of testing phase. Eventually better support for it should be worked out.
