automount might help you. It won't do exactly as you ask there (remount on failure). What it does is mount on access, and unmount after a period of inactivity. So, if the CIFS server breaks, but nobody is around, it won't be mounted at that time. But if it's available and you try to use it, it will be mounted. I've only run the automounter with NFS mounts but I think it can be used with anything that fits into the fstab. -- Jon Dowland
