I don't think so. My system was installed ages ago, still running Debian 4.0 and a long listing of that file reports: $ ls -l /var/log/dmesg -rw-r----- 1 root adm 21654 2010-02-08 12:50 /var/log/dmesg You might get a good value, give or take, using /etc/debian_version.
