1/ Try plug in the device into another usb port of the board.
Ok, I have a second usb2 port for the printing machine.
So I unplugged this one and plugged my archos machine there,
to no avail.

I plugged the printer to the usb-port I was using for the archos
and it works (I even effectively printed a page).
2/ Try with another usb cable.
I don't have any around.
3/ Try to connect the device in another computer.
That's going to be hard, but I'll try in some hours.
And see how it behaves in each case.

I would suspect the usb card/host controller going bad. How old is your computer?
About 6 years old I think.
The usb port has been used very less and I even cleaned everything
yesterday :)
