Followup: My laptop's onboard Ethernet jack is physically broken. This week I plan to buy and set up a USB Ethernet dongle. I think that when I have time, I'll try to get Wake-on-LAN to work with that. If I can't, I will probably go with the http://rtr.ca/run_from_ram/ option.
