That in itself should be a bug or a few.

IMHO it does :) diversity.

I don't do that many installs but i do remember the issues Xorg brings
when installed through the pm rather than during the install. I also
prefer that to letting tasksel haul gnome to my drive - it's a pain to
remove.

And it's fun to debug Xorg :) which should automagically work but never does.
