Yes this is true. However, the client software does support kernels greater than 2.6.22 and there are vendors out there who provide Lustre storage appliances. DataDirect Networks (www.ddn.com) is one that is also used by many DOE and DOD labs for their large compute clusters. There's also other "Storage Appliance" Vendors who specialize in Lustre for their storage, Terascala, HP's SFS. So you wouldn't necessarily have to worry about the server side as much.
