No, it's not. http://lists.debian.org/ has the explaination; I must say that the BSD folks are fairly unique in this expectation. Consider the Reply-to-Mailing-List feature in your mailer; or if your mailer is missing this consider filing a bug against it to that effect and take a look at gmane.org...
