As to turning off the backlight of your LCD on the linux console, you could take a look a vbetool - pretty sure I managed to turn it off via: # vbetool dpms off But I also had problems turning it back on, and I had to restart the system, so be prepared for some blind typing & reboots. Never managed to get the LCD to switch itself off automatically with the /etc/kbd/config options - could be a limitation of kbd, my hardware, kernel configuration, or it may have something to do with my using the extended capabilities of the atyfb console driver instead of vesafb.
