console-tools appears to be the default on debian systems and the rumor
has it that it is more current than kbd in terms of capability (?)

I use kbd, IIRC because it has a "showconsolefont" command that came in
handy at some point - there may have been other reasons as well, I don't
remember.

As to turning off the backlight of your LCD on the linux console, you
could take a look a vbetool - pretty sure I managed to turn it off via:

# vbetool dpms off

But I also had problems turning it back on, and I had to restart the
system, so be prepared for some blind typing & reboots.

Never managed to get the LCD to switch itself off automatically with the
/etc/kbd/config options - could be a limitation of kbd, my hardware,
kernel configuration, or it may have something to do with my using the
extended capabilities of the atyfb console driver instead of vesafb.
