I think this is a reinstall for me, but just thought someone might be
able to point me to some documentation so this isn't required. The
system is fully backed up, so I can try some things, and if it breaks
then will just reinstall.
Why a reinstall, if you have good backups? Why not just restore and reboot?
Cheers,

Hello Johannes,
I was finally able to install smartmontools after a reinstall of the
basic system, with some difficulty and a raft of error messages while
doing so. Much like pulling teeth. It reported several of errors on the
drive so it was obviously crook, and getting worse, as attested to by
the problems I was having to install anything at all.
Am waiting for a new hard drive to be sent, but will have to wait a few
days yet. One of the pleasures of living in an isolated area, being
taught patience.
Thanks for your reply,
Charlie
