Here:
http://news.debian.net/2009/08/06/ia32-libs-and-ia32-libs-gtk-are-back/
you can find some explanation.

I fixed my system by removing ia32-apt-get and all those 32 packages
(apt-get --purge remove ia32-apt-get lib32stdc++6 lib32gcc1
etc.). Updated the system and installed the fixed packages (ia32-libs
and ia32-libs-gtk). All seem to work fine now. Some packages, like wine,
were removed by the process, but I got all back afterwards.

I have found that following the sidux forums can give me good tips when
somebody messes some packages, for example the ia32-libs situation was
discussed lengtly here:

ps. There is also Debian weather where one can check what is the upgrade
situation: http://edos.debian.net/weather
