I've just been using wicd for a couple of days intermittend wired and wireless connections to different networks and can just say that it works great. If you don't have some peculiar reason for sticking to network-manager, you should be fine to remove it. IIRC there are different options for using dhcp with wicd. I use dhcp3-client.
