Thanks for posting this; I'll keep it in reserve. I was caught by the same trap on a similar machine (Thinkpad Z61M) a couple of weeks ago and was rescued by a knowledgeable poster on this list. I can now boot again although I no longer get the option to use the Lenny OS which is also on the disk. (Probably something to do with grub.cfg but I haven't gone into that.) It will be a good long while before I risk 'upgrading' grub on my other machines.
