Well, no.. if you don't use it that often, you don't get to know much
about it.. hence you're not likely to know whether it is good or not..

I just did test with a boot CD for knoppix and it was fine now i know it
isnt the drive itself.
Is it really locking up? Are you sure? Or is it just not ejecting?
There could be some process/program using the drive. When you press the
button, or send an eject command to the drive some way, the process
doesn't let it go.
Maybe GNOME or KDE isn't playing nice. Are you using a Desktop? Try
booting (without a disc in the drive) into single-user mode, and then
testing the drive.
