I don't know why you're having a problem, but I'd suggest the following:

    - boot into runlevel 1 if you can, or boot with Knoppix

    - check to make sure you aren't using an encrypted swap partition,
      and that it isn't hanging waiting for a password.

    - check your swap partition for bad blocks

    - reformat your swap partition

    - if you still have problems, consider using a swap file on a
      known-good partition instead of a swap partition
