That was it.  My router can handle static DNS, his can't.  I had already 
edited etc/network/interfaces and changed it from DHCP to static, and entered 
the DNS IPs.  But that appeared not to have helped.  After your email came, I 
thought a bit and realised that I had not checked etc/resolv.conf.

Bingo!  I looked and it was wrong.  A careful read of the relevant part of the 
man entry later, I edited resolv.conf using kwrite, saved and It Worked!  
Browsing is fast and accurate.  In all software.  It  has even survived two 
reboots.
