Because it's not needed anymore, especially with new monitors.

Is this the "native" resolution of the monitor? Xorg should be able to 
detect and use it automatically.

Try without xorg.conf. Mine has only:

Section "Device"
        Identifier      "Configured Video Device"
        Driver          "nvidia"
