For years I have had two linux machines (inside firewall) using the X chooser so that I could log in either to self or other machine. This has worked with kdm or xdm.
Now I am failing to get this to work with Debian Lenny on both machines (last worked with Sarge). It allows login to self, but choosing the other machine gives only the gray screen. If I don't use the chooser and do "X -query" to the other machine, I get the remote login window with no problems. I have tried whatever I could think of in kdm and xdm. I even added LoginMode=DefaultLocal to the [X-*-Greeter] section in kdmrc because the manual says the default is LocalOnly. Probing packets, I see: Query -> Willing <- to populate the Chooser. When I choose the other machine, I get ForwardQuery -> three times and no response. This surprised me because the XDMCP protocol led me to expect Request -> http://www.xfree86.org/current/xdmcp.pdf Searching, all I could find was a page of unknown date that says xdm does not follow XDMCP protocol. http://www-uxsup.csx.cam.ac.uk/~pjb1008/project/xdm-socket/ Another strange thing: I set ARG="$ARG -debug 0x9FF" (or 255) in /etc/init.d/kdm but I am not getting debugging information.
