I'll go sit at the back of the class. Yep, loading the radeon module does give me a kind-of working X. I could have sworn I'd done an lsmod to make sure it was loaded before posting, but it's been a long day. I'm used to it loading without any manual intervention - I guess I missed it this time. Shame the driver's/xrandr's support for my card is broken with this version too, but that's another thread. Thanks for your suggestion.
