Hi! I have a Brother HL2040 printer that worked perfectly well on my Debian testing with the .deb driver package Brother provides. I don't have CUPS installed, I use lpr. My printer stopped working without me changing any system configuration other than my usual package updating via aptitude.
I am afraid this is gonna be a "it's not working" mail with little added information, but I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction and even tell me if I can report this as a bug (wishlist maybe). Or maybe someone is experiencing the same problem. What I know. When I try to print something, the queue system works fine, printing jobs get queued, if the printer is off they remain in the queue, when the printer is turned on they are sent to the printer. The communication PC-> printer should be working. When a job is sent to the printer the printer "wakes up", makes all the "hot air" noise it usually does, plus the led light blink as it always did while it is receiving data. The length of the blinking still varies with the amount of data sent. Nothing at all is printed, it doesn't even spit out white pages, it just does nothing. The printer itself works, the test page gets written OK. I don't print every day so I can pinpoint the problem in a time-range from last successful printing to problem discovery. In that time range I did the updating jobs you can see in the relevant parts of my aptitude logs that I quoted at the end of this message. I strongly suspect the ghostscript and libgs8 packages in the first part of the log to be what caused it, tho I am not sure. I tried updating my Brother drivers downloading and installing the latest version (I had quite an old one but it worked well so I never bothered to get a newer one). It didn't change a thing.
